Modern Head by Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997, b. New York City, NY) was originally created in 1974. This brushed-steel configuration projects dramatically skyward, while its circular and angular motifs combine to create a dynamic tension. More fanciful shapes conspire to soften the geometric formality of the piece as a whole. Modern Head is something of a departure from the artist’s more recent sculptural style, which has been associated with his thematic treatment of brushstrokes in a three-dimensional medium.
