NORTH COVE MARINA COMMUNITY KICKOFF

North Cove Marina is officially open for the summer! Located along the Esplanade between Liberty and Vesey Streets , the Marina is a destination in itself offering public access to the waterfront and incredible views of the Hudson.

“Whether it’s to meet friends, take in the music, dine, sail, or simply enjoy breathtaking views, few places can beat Battery Park City and its Waterfront Plaza at North Cove Marina,” said BPCA President & COO Shari Hyman at a Marina Community Kickoff event on Wednesday, May 24.

This event highlighted the newly-launched North Cove Sailing school as well as the re-imagined Terrace on Waterfront Plaza, featuring an outdoor lounge and bar area open for special events every evening from June through August. These include Monday’s Coloring Bar, featuring relaxing activities to ease into the work-week, to Friday Night Shuffle Board, the perfect competition for coworkers and friends. The full listing is available here.

Shari and members of the BPC Parks team were joined by representatives from Brookfield, IGY Marinas New York, NYC & Company, and Captain Pat Harris of the historic sailing yacht Ventura, which calls the Marina home during summer sailing season.

Nautical-themed knot tying, free harbor sails and boat tours highlighted the remainder of the event, with interludes of sea shanty singing by a capella group The Johnson Girls. Captain Pat gave tours of Ventura, a nearly century-old vessel that served on anti-submarine patrol during World War II, and which can be hired for private events.

Also offered were free harbor sails for attendees courtesy of North Cove Sailing, a sailing school, club, and community center in the heart of Battery Park City offering courses and clinics for sailors of all ages and experience levels.

North Cove Sailing’s KidSail initiative, running throughout the summer for children ages 7-17, offers programs from STEM courses to a junior racing series and is open to anyone with a good attitude and ability to work with a team. A full range of sailing programs can be found here.

Finally, as a special “thank you” to the Battery Park City community, North Cove Sailing enlisted guests to help name the 12 new sailing school boats, and one whaler, comprising its fleet of ships. Approximately 120 submissions were received, with the winning names as follows:

Sail Boats:

  • Butterfly
  • Scooter
  • The Lark
  • Sophie Eliza
  • Lucille
  • Amelia Jean
  • Ruby Rose
  • The Conquering
  • Betty B
  • Hudson Ranger
  • Little Bird
  • The Bug

Whaler:

  • King Crab

In all, a great launch of an exciting new season of sailing and events at North Cove Marina. As BPCA President Hyman concluded:

“This summer, thanks to our partners at Brookfield and IGY, we’re further enhancing this experience with an exciting slate of weeknight community programming, new dining and seating options, and, of course, the newly-launched North Cove Sailing School. There’s never been a better time to experience Battery Park City, so come and enjoy!”
