As Pier A Harbor House enters its second summer season and builds on the excitement of its inaugural year, management has welcomed a new friendly face to its operations and to Battery Park City — Anthony Malone. Malone, who today is an established veteran of the hospitality business, arrived in New York from Dublin, Ireland in the spring of 2000. Upon arriving in the City, Anthony began working at Puck Fair in SOHO and quickly rose through the ranks of the industry. Nine years after first stepping foot in New York, Malone became a partner with Pier A’s Mike Jewell and Danny McDonald at Swift Hibernian Lounge on East 4th Street. Since then the team has developed an impressive portfolio of taverns and restaurants in Lower Manhattan including “The Growler” and “The Dead Rabbit”.
Today, Malone finds himself embracing his latest endeavor as Director of Operations at Pier A while planning for a dynamic season ahead. In fact, on Sunday April 24th, the Irish Consulate in New York is commemorating the 100th anniversary of Ireland’s 1916 Easter Rising at Pier A and Wagner Park in partnership with the Battery Park City Authority. Given Pier A’s historic value as the first landing point for many Irish immigrants after clearing immigration at Ellis Island, Anthony finds it hard to imagine a more fitting location in New York City to commemorate the events that cleared the way for Ireland’s independence. Malone acknowledged he and the entire Pier A team are honored to host the event, which will be a celebration of the strong bond between Ireland and America and the shared traditions among the nations. Battery Park City residents are encouraged to attend the day’s free festivities which will include Irish music, drama, and culture.
Looking further ahead, Anthony is also particularly enthusiastic about Pier A’s latest undertaking with the opening of “Blacktail” this summer. This space will offer specialty drinks and cocktails within a Cuba-themed environment in the Harrison Room on the second floor of the Pier.
When asked for his favorite location in Battery Park City, it is no surprise Anthony said with certainty it was Pier A Plaza – the open public space adjacent to Pier A’s establishment, where on a beautiful evening one can look out onto New York Harbor and enjoy the mesmerizing sunset behind Lady Liberty.
