IRISH HUNGER MEMORIAL REOPENS

After completion of repairs as part of its Waterproofing and Leak Remediation project, BPCA reopened the Irish Hunger Memorial to the public on Friday, July 28. Said BPCA President & COO Shari Hyman:

“The Irish Hunger Memorial was first dedicated 15 years ago this month; today it re-opens to stand for coming generations as a place of reflection and remembrance. And just as America has long welcomed immigrants from Ireland and beyond, we’re pleased to once again welcome Battery Park City visitors to experience this poignant tribute to the unbreakable human spirit.”

The Irish Hunger Memorial is a public work of art located at North End Avenue and Vesey Street in Battery Park City. Containing stones from each of Ireland’s 32 counties, it was conceived of and designed by artist Brian Tolle and intended to be a contemplative space devoted to raising awareness of the Great Irish Hunger and Migration of 1845-1852.

The Memorial was dedicated in July 2002. It is open 8:00am-9:00PM from May-October, and 8:00am-7:00PM from November-April.
