Earlier this month our BPC Parks Horticulture Team pruned the weeping willow (Salix babylonica) trees outside the Museum of Jewish Heritage on Battery Park City’s southern end.
Due to the fragility of willow branches and limbs, they require pruning on regular 3-4 year cycles so as not to become break dangers for passersby underneath them on windy days. This is especially true in more densely-populated urban settings. Pruning also promotes a healthy, stronger structure and will allow our trees to survive much longer in this very busy place.
These willows will leaf out over the coming months, and return to their beautifully lush and familiar “weeping” look by spring 2019.
