BATTERY PARK CITY AUTHORITY RELEASES WINTER EVENTS CALENDAR

More than 450 Programs and Events Open to All;

Senior Exercise Classes Now Free as Part of Official Programming

The Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) today announced release of its Winter Parks Programming Calendar, detailing more than 450 public programs and events taking place throughout Battery Park City from January to April 2017. The full calendar of mostly-free, indoor and outdoor programs – including winter games, exercise classes, art and play events, workshops, storytelling and talks, BPC’s Annual Art Exhibition, and more – is available via the Battery Park City Parks website, and will be mailed to all BPC Parks mailing list subscribers next week.

“As the cold weather approaches, I invite you to cozy up with our Winter Events Calendar, chock full of exciting seasonal programs for the whole family,” said BPCA President and Chief Operating Officer Shari C. Hyman. “Over the past year our BPC Parks programming has proven more popular than ever, drawing some 60,000 attendees to hundreds of free community art, play, and recreational events. As we welcome 2017, I hope you’ll all partake in the wonderful opportunities detailed in these pages – and I look forward to making 2017 our biggest and best year yet!”

The Winter 2017 Parks Programming Calendar features illustrated program offerings taking place throughout Battery Park City, organized by those of interest to guests of all ages, kids, teens, and adults. Programming will take place at the BPC Ball Fields, Rockefeller Park, BPC Parks Headquarters at 75 Battery Place, 6 River Terrace, the Community Center at Stuyvesant High School (CCSHS), and the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust. The calendar also includes a map of key Battery Park City locations and information about how the public may reserve space at various BPC event facilities.

Also for the first time, as a result of ongoing work between BPCA and Battery Park City Seniors, a group led by neighborhood resident Ann Schwalbenberg, the twice-weekly Senior Exercise Class at 6 River Terrace has been officially incorporated into the BPC Parks Programming Calendar:

  • Senior Exercise Group – Mondays & Fridays, 10:30am, 6 River Terrace. Join a community of seniors and older adults for a total body workout appropriate for any fitness level. The instructor-led classes are designed to increase flexibility, joint stability, balance, coordination, agility, muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance. Train in a friendly environment doing a workout that will keep you healthy and active!

“Battery Park City Seniors organizes programs that run the gamut – from exercise classes to museum visits, and from health information to luncheons to neighborhood excursions and more,” said Ann Schwalbenberg, Battery Park City Seniors Coordinator. “We’re thrilled that our Senior Exercise Group is now set to expand and thrive right here in Battery Park City as part of a vibrant calendar of year-round programs, and I encourage more local seniors to come and join the fun!”

“The Free Senior Exercise Group is a positive example of what can come from collaboration between the community, CB1 and the BPCA in the form of working groups on an issue that makes a huge difference in the lives of a very important – and very vulnerable – group of Lower Manhattan residents: our seniors,” said Justine Cuccia, Manhattan Community Board 1 Public Member and Senior Working Group participant. “This is exactly the kind of partnership that creates value for everybody, while also building trust between residents and government. The fact that the Senior Working Group has already begun to yield dividends, in the form of programming and funding, is very encouraging! I look forward to continued productive teamwork between the BPCA and community to build on this momentum.”

“It’s getting cold, but programming at Battery Park City is heating up,” said State Senator Daniel Squadron. “As we kick off this winter’s programming, I thank the Battery Park City Authority for another season of programming, along with my colleagues, Manhattan Community Board 1, and community members.”

“Beautiful public spaces are a starting point, but it’s the activities and events that bring people together in those spaces that make a collection of blocks into a community,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “As winter arrives, it’s great to know all the events and activities coming up in the Battery Park City community. From ‘Stories Under the Stars’ to the annual art exhibition, I hope neighborhood residents and visitors from other parts of the city alike will enjoy what Battery Park City has to offer this winter.”

“The Museum of Jewish Heritage is proud to be part of this special neighborhood and offer programs that help to foster communal spirit and learning. We are particularly honored to partner with the Battery Park City Authority on “NIGHT – An International Tribute to Elie Wiesel,” said Museum of Jewish Heritage President & CEO Michael S. Glickman. “Battery Park City residents are invited to join luminaries, friends, and community leaders in paying tribute to Elie Wiesel at the first-ever community reading of Wiesel’s seminal work, Night. This extraordinary event is free and will be live streamed, thanks to the Authority.”

“This winter I hope everyone takes an opportunity to enjoy some of the programs that our friends at the BPC Parks department provide our neighborhood, events that can only happen in Battery Park City!,” said Tammy Meltzer, Co-Chair, CB1 Battery Park City Committee.
