PEOPLE OF BPC

Michael Revier
General Manager IGY Marinas
Favorite spot in BPC- North Cove Marina “Not only because it’s where I work, but it’s also where I met my wife”

Michael Revier was born in Georgia but grew up near the Jersey shore in Howell, New Jersey. It was there Michael developed his lifelong love of the sea, one of his earliest and fondest memories being fishing with his grandfather during the summers in the waters of Barnegat Bay.

He came to sailing by chance at age 12, to assist his dad who bought a boat and then nearly found himself overwhelmed by all it entailed. Two heads being better than one, Michael took up sailing to lend a hand and quickly became intrigued by the physical, natural and technical aspects of the sport.

Michael went on to attend Rutgers University where, stepping back from the water’s edge for a few years he studied Urban Planning & Philosophy. After graduation he took an internship with an engineering firm where he worked in a cubicle, and quickly decided that office life was not his calling.

In 2007 Michael applied for job at a local airport and marina – “whichever one hired me first,” to hear him tell it. Once again by chance – and to the benefit of all those who have encountered him on the water since – it was Fairhaven Yacht Works in Fairhaven, New Jersey, that called back. And so the path that would take Michael to running a marina in one of the world’s great port cities began in earnest a decade ago on the Navesink River, where he could be found scraping barnacles off boat bottoms for nine bucks an hour. Even then it beat the cubicle life.

In 2009, Michael began work as a Marina Supervisor for the Manhattan Yacht Club at the North Cove Marina here in Battery Park City, where he gained a tremendous amount of experience and even received his U.S. Coast Guard Master license. After four years with Manhattan Yacht Club he was hired by Island Global Yachting (IGY) as General Manager of the Newport Yacht Club & Marina – barely two weeks before Hurricane Sandy made landfall in 2012. In that time Michael prepped the marina and proudly reports that with a lot of hard work, and some good luck, not one of the more than 100 boats docked there sustained any damage.

From Newport Michael became General Manager of the Yacht Haven Grande Marina in St. Thomas, before the opportunity to come back home to North Cove arose earlier this year. Chance had played a hand once again, and for Michael it was a no-brainer.

Michael currently lives in Jersey City with his wife and daughter, a short trip from North Cove Marina. In his spare time he enjoys to hike, bike, read – and scour the Internet for old boats to rebuild.
