BPCA and BPC Parks Community Commemorate Staff’s Efforts in the Aftermath of 9/11 with Formal Dedication of South Cove to Those Whose Sacrifice Helped Renew and Restore Battery Park City

In a private ceremony held in the South Cove this morning, BPCA and BPC Parks employees gathered to commemorate the heroic efforts of staff, past and present, in the days following the September 11th attacks.

The ceremony included an unveiling of a plaque and “Circle of Remembrance” which are now a permanent fixture to honor the sacrifice and dedication displayed by all those who helped restore the Battery Park City community following the devastation of that day.

“The site where we stand today was selected by a committee of Parks and Authority employees, many of whom were part of the renewal efforts following 9/11” said BPCA President Shari C. Hyman. “What they have created is a beautiful and poignant tribute” she added.

Ms. Hyman also noted, “This past year we lost a devoted colleague, Gary Satriano, following a long battle with a 9/11 related cancer. Unfortunately, Gary is only the most recent example of the tremendous price that continues to be paid for such dedication. We also remember and honor Parks’ employees Maurice Smalls & Will Smyers and are mindful of our colleagues who today are facing health challenges due to their time spent on site throughout the recovery period.”

Among the ceremony’s other speakers were former BPCA President Timothy Carey and current Director of Horticulture Eric “T” Fleisher, both of whom played active roles in the recovery efforts and revival of the neighborhood.  Assemblymember Deborah Glick and CB1 Chair Catherine McVay Hughes provided remarks as well.
