BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Authority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on tap for May!
– New planting will begin at the BPC Ball Field Terrace this month. The planting plan includes 85% of plants native to the Northeast and was designed with the purpose of attracting pollinators and birds, while providing food and habitat for these species.
– I Love My Park Day: On Saturday, May 7th join BPCA staff at the Rockefeller Park House from 11am-12pm as we discuss the importance of biodiversity in Battery Park City using the citizen science app iNaturalist. Learn more by visiting BPCA’s iNaturalist page here.
– Water play features are returning this month throughout the neighborhood, along with tables, chairs and umbrellas returning to Pier A Plaza.
– BPCA Parks Operations Staff have transitioned to summer working hours and will be onsite through 9:30pm and public restrooms will remain open until 8:45pm.
– Spotted Lanternfly traps located throughout Battery Park City will be monitored for the presence of SLF nymphs. SLF nymphs are the juvenile stages of the Spotted Lanternfly adult that will return later in the summer. BPCA staff are working to monitor and minimize these harmful insects before they reach the adult stage. Learn more here.
– The hanging baskets along South End Avenue will be planted later this month. Since these showy tropical plants are often very susceptible to nighttime cold snaps, they are planted after the last spring frost date. Get ready for a full season’s worth of blooms running through the end of October!
– As a reminder, we ask all those who live, work and visit BPC to reduce, reuse, compost and recycle! BPCA’s zero waste goals requires on average a 90% or greater overall diversion from landfill.
