BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Authority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on tap for February!
– Paving the Way: The Authority continues with installation of new permeable pavers in the cul-de-sac along South End Avenue adjacent South Cove, with work expected to be completed this month. Permeable pavements and green stormwater infrastructure can help to reduce flooding risks by providing opportunities for stormwater to infiltrate or slow down runoff, while also filtering and cleaning this runoff through green infrastructure.
– On the Bench: Our Maintenance team is refinishing the teak benches relocated to the BPC Ball Fields Terrace from Wagner Park’s south garden.
– Off the Bench: Belvedere Plaza benches are being cleaned, sanded, oiled and refinished. While parks users may see one of the benches “missing” from time to time – know it’ll be back soon looking better than ever.
– Right out of the gate: The West Thames dog run gates are being sequentially removed for repairs, with a temporary fence installed while work occurs. Public access to the run will be maintained via the gate not currently undergoing repairs.
– Just a trim: Tree pruning will be taking place throughout our parks to ensure the safety and the health of the neighborhood’s tree canopy.
– Spotting Spotted Lanternflies: This winter our team continues scouting, monitoring, and scraping Spotted Lanternfly egg masses throughout the park. Read more: The Spotted Lanternflies of Manhattan.
– Soil Toil: Soil samples will be taken throughout our parks for physical, chemical, and biological analyses. These samples will be reviewed in house and to provide BPCA’s horticulturists a better idea of our soil health.
– Until we chip again: With collection of trees complete for the 2022-2023 holiday season, BPCA’s annual tree recycling program is coming to close this week, with the final chipping session scheduled for February 2. Thanks to your efforts, this season more than 1,600 trees will have been chipped into mulch for use in Battery Park City’s parks and other greenspaces!
– Zero Waste: As a decades-long leader in sustainability, BPCA is striving to divert 90% of what is sent to landfill! To continue helping toward our Zero Waste goal, we ask that you rethink what you throw away in the parks, and please recycle or compost items.
