BPC PARKS HAPPENINGS: FEBRUARY 2022

BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Autthority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on tap for February!

Snowfall Prep: Our Parks Operations staff stays prepared for the winter season by ensuring the snow removal equipment is at the ready. New in 2022 is BPCA’s first electric snow blower (pictured below), which made its debut over the snowy weekend of January 29-30.

Prepare for freezing conditions: Staff arrives on-site before a snow event starts, cautioning-off secondary areas and working to apply non-toxic, biodegradable liquid deicer in select locations – primarily stairs and bridges – across Battery Park City. This facilitates quick snow and ice removal from these priority locations while minimizing the risks of slips and falls for parks users. The team also activates the West Thames Street Bridge’s heat-radiant steps (no deicer needed there!) and opens the scuppers along the BPC Esplanade so that melted snow drains rather than icing over the surface. Watching the temperatures: When the temps are above freezing, the team uses water to clean BPC’s open spaces (see the power-washed West Thames Dog Run, below, on February 8). When at at / near / below freezing the team employs alternative cleaning methods so as not to create potential icing conditions.

Feeling Chipper: Wood chips from BPC’s freshly-chipped Christmas trees will be used in the parks in a variety of ways. Some of the material will go straight out to the gardens as mulch and some will be used to provide a carbon source for our composting.

Preventive tree pruning will be performed throughout the parks this month.

– BPC’s community compost drop offs located at 75 Battery Place, Gateway Plaza, and the lower level of River Terrace and Chambers Street are open 24/7 for contributing fruit and vegetable scraps for our compost program.

– Expect to see a new planting at the BPC Ball Field Terrace this year. The Authority is currently working on a design using a majority native plant palette, and securing plant material for delivery late spring / early summer.

– Productive Waste: Fully-cured and tested dog waste compost being applied to a designated area along the West Side Highway / Route 9A median (pictured below). Read More: BPC DID YOU KNOW? | DOG WASTE COMPOST APPLICATION
