BPC PARKS HAPPENINGS: APRIL 2022

BPC Parks Happenings is a monthly “snapshot” of the Authority’s work in maintaining Battery Park City’s parks and public spaces. Scroll down to see what’s on tap for April!

Dog Run Gussy Up: Parks Operations staff to complete top coating of paint at the Kowsky Plaza “Sirius” Dog Run

Dog Day Afternoon: As the weather warms, cleaning of the dog runs will occur more frequently and on a rotating basis as needed. If a dog run requires immediate attention please contact: info.bpc@bpca.ny.gov. (Pictured below, BPCA staff deep cleans the West Thames run.)

– Keep it Neat: Strategic tree and shrub pruning in Teardrop Park is scheduled for the week of April 8; work is necessary to facilitate completion of scaffolding work at 325 North End Ave.

– Green Acres: BPC lawns will begin opening on a rolling basis April 12, with removal of fences from the taking place through April 15. Thank you for allowing our lawns to take a much needed rest and recuperate for the 2022 season!

At Your Service: The Esplanade Plaza Volleyball Court will be installed for the season on April 13-14 (rain date April 19).

Like New: Kowsky Plaza mechanical rooms will be treated with an oil to keep the wood in good condition and minimize fading.

– Let it Flow: Ground hydrants and water fountains will be energized for use across BPC, with the irrigation system turned on once BPC’s lawns re-open.

– Pest Management: Dry ice will be applied throughout park areas for rat control purposes; this more environmentally-friendly method avoids unintended targets like birds and squirrels effected by traditional bait boxes.

Bees abuzzin’: BPC’s beehives will be up and buzzing again officially on April 15 – and don’t miss our “Meet the Beekeeper” event on April 21! Read More: BPC DID YOU KNOW? | BATTERY PARK CITY BEEHIVE!

– Spring Planting: Deliveries of native plants for spring planting will begin starting mid-April for immediate planting…

– Spring Sprung: …and a succession of spring bulbs blooms can be found this month at Belvedere Plaza, the Chambers Street planters, and outside BPCA’s 75 Battery Place facility specifically – but the more than 60,000 bulbs planted in the fall will be coming up throughout BPC.

– Waste of an Education: On Tuesday, April 26, BPCA staff will be tabling in the neighborhoods three dog runs to educate dog owners on our Dog Waste Composting Program.

– Spotted: Lantern Flies! Spotted Lantern Fly traps in trees starting April 7 to monitor and capture the young SLF nymphs as they emerge from their egg masses. This will help to limit adult populations in BPC by capturing the young ones earlier in the season. Read more: BPC DID YOU KNOW? | SPOTTED LANTERNFLY TRAPS

– Ramping Up: The ramp will be installed for the summer and fall months in the Lily Pond during the week of April 18. Read more: KEEPING IT WILD! DUCKS AT ROCKEFELLER PARK LILY POOL

– New recycling cans will be placed throughout BPC by the end of the month. Have thoughts about where they should be? Email us at: info.bpc@bpca.ny.gov

Zero Waste for the Win! Divert 90% of what is set to landfill!   – We ask that all those who live, work and visit BPC be mindful about items they bring into the open spaces that need to be disposed of.  We ask that that you reduce, recycle, compost, and/or reuse items when possible.
